IMPORTANT INFORMATION - changes to card payment surcharges
Changes to the rules around card payment surcharges are coming into effect from 1st October 2026.
Currently, when a client pays an invoice by credit card, the applicable card processing fee is added to the client's payment as a credit card surcharge. The flat transaction fees associated with bank account deductions are absorbed by IFA-Aust and passed on in your monthly RCTI.
From 1st October 2026, card surcharges will no longer be permitted to be passed on to the cardholder for Visa, Mastercard, EFTPOS or American Express payments. This change means that while the cost of processing a card payment will still be incurred, it can no longer be separately charged to the client as a card surcharge.
What does this mean for you and your clients?
If you continue to offer automatic bank or credit card payments through your invoices:
Your clients will still be able to pay their invoices by credit card or bank account.
Your clients will no longer be charged a credit card surcharge.
The applicable Ezidebit processing fees for both bank and credit card transaction fees will instead be charged to IFA-Aust and passed on to you in your monthly RCTI.
The same arrangement will apply where clients have an existing Ezidebit authority for regular deductions.
There is no change to the fact that IFA-Aust does not accept cash or cheques.
You have a choice
You can choose to continue offering bank or credit card payments through your invoices, or you can ask us to remove the "PAY NOW" button and any other reference to bank or credit card payments from your invoice template.
If you remove the option from your invoice template, you can still use Ezidebit when you choose to do so. You would simply provide the payment option to your client separately rather than having it automatically available from their invoice, by way of an Ezidebit deduction authority form, or the existing 'Webpay' link.
The Webpay link will remain active and available for you to provide to your client on an as-needed basis. Note, however, that this link is for credit card payments only, bank account deductions are not available through this link.
There are a couple of important things to keep in mind when making your decision:
The decision applies to your practice as a whole. We can't have Ezidebit available on some invoices but not others.
The credit card and bank account payment options are linked, so the options are either both available or both removed.
Removing the option to pay by bank or credit card deduction does create some additional payment friction for clients, as it gives them fewer ways to pay. It will mean that the only other payment method will be EFT, as cash or cheques are not accepted.
Any existing invoices that have already been issued with the PAY NOW button, or any clients who have the Webpay link will still be able to use those options. This means that some payments may still come through Ezidebit and the associated processing costs will be charged to IFA-Aust and will be passed on in your monthly RCTI.
What we need from you
Please let us know no later than Monday, 21 September 2026 whether you would like to:
1. Keep Ezidebit available on your invoices
Clients can continue to pay by bank account or card via the PAY NOW button or by having the Webpay link published on their invoices, with card processing costs being absorbed by the practice from 1 October; or
2. Remove the PAY NOW and bank/credit card payment option from your invoice template
Clients will no longer have a payment option directly from their invoice, although you can still provide the separate credit card payment link or Ezidebit authority form to clients when you choose.
We need your decision by 21 September so we have enough time to update your invoice template before the changes take effect. If we haven't heard from you by this date, your invoice template will remain unchanged and bank/credit card deduction options will continue to be available as payment methods on your invoices.
